Pebble Beach, Calif., February 11, 2018 – Today, Monterey County and Central Coast science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs received $210,000 through Chevron’s Eagles for Education Initiative. For each eagle recorded by PGA Tour Professionals at this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament, Chevron pledged to donate $5,000. Over the course of the four tournament rounds, PGA Tour professionals scored 27 eagles, for a total of $135,000. To top up this donation, Chevron is pledging an added $70,000 to credit the two amateur eagles scored by the Chevron representatives. The $205,000 total proceeds will be dedicated to local education programs, benefiting the more than 20,000 students who participate in Rancho Cielo, Pajaro Valley Unified School District, Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries, Greenfield Community Science Workshop, Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, and CHISPA.
In addition to Pro-Am’s impressive lineup of participants—including the world’s best PGA TOUR players Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, and celebrity players Chris Harrison of “The Bachelor,” Toby Keith, Josh Duhamel, and Carson Daly—the tournament featured Chevron’s STEM Zone. A popular attraction for tournament visitors, this interactive hub provided Monterey County students exclusive access to hands-on, sports-themed activities which demonstrate the applications of STEM in sports.
Since 2013, Chevron has invested over $340 million in education initiatives, including Eagles for Education, aimed at increasing the availability and quality of STEM education and technical training. Through innovative partnerships with education organizations, government officials, non-profit organizations and community leaders, Chevron continues to champion STEM learning and support programs. Whether by educating students, training teachers, providing classroom resources, supporting educational standards, funding out-of-school activities or preparing workers for career success, Chevron works to ensure every student has access to educational and STEM-related opportunities.
“We are proud to partner with Chevron in their commitment to the future of education, STEM learning and our students,” said Steve John, Monterey Peninsula Foundation CEO and tournament director. “We are thankful for Chevron’s unwavering support of our Monterey County community.”
