Chevron USA, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, Cameron Champ Foundation and First Tee Monterey County host local golf clinic pledging $100,000 toward diversity, equity and inclusion through the game of golf

MONTEREY, Calif., January 28, 2022 – Chevron U.S.A. Inc., Monterey Peninsula Foundation and Cameron Champ Foundation will show their support of First Tee – Monterey County’s plans to expand their youth development program to the Monterey Peninsula by presenting a youth clinic from 3 to 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 1) at Monterey Pines Golf Course.

The clinic will be hosted by PGA Tour star Cameron Champ and rapper and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am celebrity golfer ScHoolboy Q.

Champ, a First Tee alumni, was a participant in the 2012 PURE Insurance Championship Impacting First Tee at Pebble Beach. “This is going to be a fantastic event for so many kids who may never have had the opportunity to be exposed to the game of golf and its values,” said Steve John, Monterey Peninsula Foundation CEO. “We are excited to see First Tee programming expand throughout Monterey County.”

Champ and ScHoolboy Q will entertain and coach a group of about 75 primarily African American youth during the clinic. Champ is one of the top stars on the PGA TOUR and operates his own Foundation located in Citrus Heights, Calif. The foundation is committed to unlocking the potential in and transforming the lives of youth from underserved and underrepresented communities. ScHoolboy Q is playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for the first time and is from South Central Los Angeles.

Youth from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, local high schools, sports groups, churches and military families will enjoy watching the two celebrities hit shots on the driving range and chip shots to a green before having the opportunity to try and to emulate their skills. Coaches from First Tee Monterey County will assist the two stars by teaching core values such as respect, courtesy, and sportsmanship.

“We are so grateful to be part of this spectacular event,” said Nick Nelson, CEO of First Tee – Monterey County. “Since 2004, First Tee has positively impacted the lives of over 100,000 young people in Salinas, King City, Greenfield, Gonzales and Castroville. In schools where First Tee conducts programming, state testing scores in math and English have risen and absenteeism has dropped. Since launching its ‘Going Gangbuster Tour’ in 2007, youth involvement in gangs has also dropped. We are thrilled to be taking the first steps today to bring our successful program in Salinas to the Monterey Peninsula, where we will be able to serve kids living in Seaside and the surrounding areas.”

During the event, Chevron, Cameron Champ Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation will make a combined $100,000 donation to First Tee – Monterey County to be the founding partners for the chapters’ search for a permanent programming site on the Peninsula. “It is exciting to bring an intentional plan to expand our programming to positively change the lives of young people in Seaside, Marina and other cities on the Peninsula,” Nelson said.
